Piazzale Roma is the most important traffic junction in Venice and the first impression most visitors get of the lagoon city. The Ponte della Libertà (Liberty Bridge), the only bridge connecting Venice with the mainland, ends at the square. Thus, all cars, public buses and the streetcar from the mainland arrive at Piazzale Roma. Also, most of the parking houses are located directly on Piazzale Roma. In addition, the main train station Santa Lucia is only about 100 meters from the square.

Ways from Piazzale Roma to the old town

From Piazzale Roma, visitors to Venice make their way through the city. There are a variety of ways to do this. If you are good on foot and like to walk over many bridges, it is of course best to walk through the city. Pedestrians should keep in mind that not everything in Venice is just around the corner and, due to the crowds in the city, it can take an hour or more to reach your destination.

If you prefer to travel by water, you can board one of the many vaporetti (meaning “water buses”) at Piazzale Roma, which will take you to all parts of the city. The wide Grand Canal runs between Piazzale Roma and Venice’s main train station. Since 2008, the city’s two main transportation hubs have been connected by a pedestrian bridge, the Ponte della Costituzione (Constitution Bridge).
