SABATINI GARDENS

Description

Essentials about the Sabatini Gardens in brief

After a visit to the Royal Palace of Madrid, be sure to stretch your legs in the Sabatini Gardens. Adjacent to the palace directly to the north, the gardens are among the most beautiful geometric gardens in Madrid. From here you also have a beautiful view of the neighboring Royal Palace.

The history of the Sabatini Gardens

During the construction of the Royal Palace, the architects involved, among them Francisco Sabatini, planned a garden area on the north side of the palace. The project was never carried out, however, and instead the royal stables were built on the site to house the horses, carriages and carriages of the royal court. After a few centuries of delay, the construction of the once planned gardens was finally begun during the Second Spanish Republic and completed after the Spanish Civil War. The gardens were named after their former spiritual creator Sabatini.

The landscape of the Sabatini Gardens

Those who like strictly geometric gardens will feel at home in the Sabatini Gardens. The park is crossed by avenues laid out at right angles and lined with accurately trimmed hedges. However, the Sabatini Gardens are interesting not only because of their geometrical layout, but also because of their numerous sculptures, which were originally intended to stand on the cornice of the palace.

By the way, from the rectangular pond in the middle of the garden, surrounded by marble sculptures and trees, one has a very nice view of the northern facade of the Royal Palace. This is especially beautiful in the evening light conditions, when the yellows and reds of the sunset give the otherwise gray palace a beautiful hue.
