Plaza de España is one of the most famous and imposing squares in Madrid. Located at the end of the Gran Vía boulevard, the plaza marks the transition between Madrid’s old town and modern Madrid. The square is best known for its two skyscrapers, the Edificio España and the Torre de Madrid, as well as the monument to Spain’s national poet Miguel de Cervantes.

The monument of Miguel de Cervantes

Plaza de España consists of a spacious green area, a water basin and a large monument in honor of the Spanish national poet Miguel de Cervantes. The monument was designed by architects Rafael Martínez Zapatero and Pedro Muguruza, and the sculptures are by Spanish sculptor Lorenzo Coullaut Valera. The poet Cervantes looks down from his perch at the characters of his most famous novel: Don Quixote on horseback and Sancho Panza on donkey.

The skyscrapers at Plaza de España

Cervantes, Don Quixote and Sancho Panza are overlooked by the two skyscrapers at Plaza de España. With a height of 142 meters, the Torre de Madrid (Madrid Tower) is one of the tallest buildings in the city. The skyscraper was built in 1957 by the brothers Julián and José María Otamendi Machimbarrena. Right next to it is the Edificio de España (Building of Spain), one of the most representative skyscrapers in the Spanish capital. The building was built in 1953 in neo-baroque style and has a shape in four graduated heights.
