BOTANISCHER GARTEN MÜNCHEN-NYMPHENBURG

Description

Essentials about the Botanischer Garten München-Nymphenburg in brief

A visit to the Botanischer Garten München-Nymphenburg (Munich-Nymphenburg Botanical Garden) is absolutely recommended not only for amateur botanists. In the botanical garden, which adjoins the Nymphenburg Palace Park to the north, visitors can see plants, trees and also animals from almost all climatic zones of the world, from humid tropical areas to hot deserts and cool mountain forests. With an area of 21 hectares, the Munich Botanical Garden is one of the largest and also most popular of its kind in the whole of Germany.

The history of the Botanischer Garten München-Nymphenburg

In 1812, the first botanical garden was founded in Munich. The remains of this facility, now called the Old Botanical Garden, are located between the Stachus and Königsplatz in the center of the city. Due to the rapid growth of the city and the resulting air pollution, a new botanical garden was conceived at the gates of Munich in Nymphenburg at the beginning of the 20th century. After four years of construction, the New Botanical Garden was opened in 1914.

The greenhouses

About 16,000 plant species are cultivated in the botanical garden. Plants of humid tropical areas, cool tropical mountain forests and deserts have their place in the display collection of the 15 greenhouses covering more than 4,500 square meters. Orchid lovers can marvel at over 2,000 species of orchids here. Water fans will find the most unusual aquatic plant species in 15 aquariums. Jungle fans can get a whiff of jungle air in the Palm House or explore a variety of tropical plants in the Tropical House (surrounded by iguanas, frogs and other inhabitants of the tropics). And for desert lovers, all sorts of strangely shaped cacti await in the large cactus house.

The flower beds and the Arboretum

The outdoor area of the botanical garden turns into a beautiful sea of blossoms in spring. One of the highlights is the rose garden, where both old and new rose varieties can be seen. Tree lovers should definitely visit the Arboretum with its deciduous and coniferous trees from all regions of the world. Those who are more interested in fruits and vegetables should have seen the beds of useful and medicinal plants, where countless varieties of fruits, vegetables, herbs and spices are cultivated.

The Alpinum

Due to Munich’s location on the edge of the Alps, there is also an Alpinum in the botanical garden. In the replica of a hilly alpine landscape, plants from a wide variety of mountain regions around the world have been gathered together, arranged according to geographical criteria. From the Alpinum you also have a beautiful view of the garden’s large pond.

The Planetary Path

Another attraction of the Botanischen Garten München-Nymphenburg is the so-called “Planetary Walk”, which aims to make one aware of the enormous distances of our solar system. Visitors start the walk at the planet Neptune in the heath in the western part and walk to the sun at the pavilion in the east of the complex. Fortunately, the path is designed on a scale of 1:8,000,000,000 (1 centimeter thus corresponds to 80,000 kilometers), so you don’t have to walk 4.5 billion kilometers, but only about 600 meters. Anyone who has nevertheless become tired of walking can let his/her legs dangle a little in the beautiful café in the center of the botanical garden.
