PERANAKAN MUSEUM

Description

Essentials about the Peranakan Museum in brief

Anyone interested in the cultural history of Singapore should take a look at the Peranakan Museum. In fact, the museum is the best source of information about the heritage and culture of the so-called “Peranakan”. The Peranakan are the descendants of Chinese immigrants who settled in Southeast Asia (Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia) from the 15th to the 17th century. Singapore’s Peranakan ethnic group consists mainly of Peranakan Chinese, descendants of Chinese traders who settled in the busy port of Singapore in the 19th century.

The building of the Peranakan Museums

The Peranakan Museum was established in 1982 in the beautiful building of a former Chinese school. It is located in close proximity to Fort Canning Park and the National Museum of Singapore.

The exhibitions of the Peranakan Museum

In ten exhibition areas, the Peranakan Museum houses probably the most important collection of exhibits on Peranakan culture in the world. The Peranakan culture is not only composed of Chinese elements, but has also blended over time with elements from the Peranakan’s new homelands. Highlights of the museum include an elaborate 12-day Peranakan wedding and stories of prominent Peranakan. In addition, Peranakan jewelry, furniture and textiles are on display.
