Essentials about AquaRio in brief
Fish lovers and underwater fans should definitely have seen the Rio de Janeiro Marine Aquarium, AquaRio for short, when visiting Rio. With over 3,000 marine animals from 350 different species cavorting in 28 aquariums with 4.5 million liters of water, the AquaRio is the largest aquarium in all of South America.
The aquariums in AquaRio
Probably the biggest attraction of AquaRio is the so-called “Recinto Oceânico” (“Ocean Tank”), the largest aquarium with a capacity of 3.5 million liters and a depth of seven meters. The ocean tank can be crossed through a tunnel, from which you can get a great view of the sharks, rays and other fish circling above you. If you want to increase the excitement a bit more, you can also spend the night in the depths of the ocean. Especially for children this is a unique experience. If that’s too scary for you, you can “assemble” fish to your own taste in terms of species, color and size in the Virtual Aquarium. For haptic people, there are also touch tanks where you get to touch many of the species.
The museums in AquaRio
In addition, visitors can learn about a variety of topics related to marine life at the adjacent Museum of Science. And even surfers have a good reason to visit AquaRio. The Museum of Surf, which is also connected to the AquaRio, presents the history of surfing in Brazil. Anyone who enjoys looking at historic surfboards is in the right place here.
