GRANVILLE ISLAND

Description

Essentials about Granville Island in brief

Granville Island is one of Vancouver’s most popular shopping, cultural and nightlife districts and is equally popular with locals and tourists. A visit to the island should therefore definitely be on the visit list when traveling to Vancouver. Granville Island a colorful and vibrant mix of markets, shopping streets, theaters and businesses. The highlight of the island is a visit to the Public Market. With its countless culinary specialties, the market hall is a paradise for all food lovers. And if that’s not enough, you can also eat delicious fish in some seafood restaurants and taste craft beer in one of the local breweries.

Characteristics of Granville Island

Actually, Granville Island is not an island at all, but only a peninsula located directly south of downtown Vancouver in the False Creek inlet. Granville Island was created in 1915 through land reclamation efforts by filling in the channel between two shallow sandbars. The peninsula was once an industrial area that became more and more decayed beginning in the 1950s and was finally converted to commercial and artistic uses in the 1970s.

Today, Granville Island is a colorful and vibrant mix of markets, shopping streets, several theaters, a wide variety of commercial enterprises (such as a glassworks, a print shop, two breweries, shoemakers, jewelers, and potters), a marina, and a university of art and design.

The market hall on Granville Island

The biggest attraction on Granville Island is the Public Market – a true paradise for food lovers. Here you can stock up on fresh fruit and vegetables, fish and meat, baked goods and all kinds of culinary specialties at countless stalls. If the weather is nice, it is recommended to get something to eat in the market and then enjoy the colorful hustle and bustle of Granville Island on one of the park benches outside. If you prefer to sit down “properly”, you can also eat very well in the food court at the end of the market hall. Due to its waterfront location, Granville Island naturally has some great seafood restaurants to offer. And when it comes to (alcoholic) beverages, you can sample the beer from the two local breweries and the high-proof drinks from the local schnapps and sake distillery.

Art on Granville Island

If you’re interested in arts and crafts, Granville Island is definitely the place to be. The studios and workshops of the artists and craftsmen based on the peninsula are great treasure troves for people looking for art objects. From glass to pottery to jewelry, the range of art on offer is very wide. So if you want to take home a souvenir from Vancouver or Canada, you’ll find a good selection on Granville Island.
