The sights on Robson Street

Robson Street begins in the southeast of Downtown Vancouver right by the large BC Place Stadium, home of Vancouver’s soccer team, the BC Lions, and the Vancouver Whitecaps soccer team. Just a few yards from the stadium is the famous Vancouver Library building, somewhat reminiscent of the Colosseum in Rome. Art lovers will find another attraction on Robson Street, and that is the Vancouver Art Gallery. After crossing Downtown Vancouver, Robson Street ends in the northeast of the city center at Stanley Park, just a few meters from the Lost Lagoon lake.

The history of Robson Street

Incidentally, the street is named after John Robson, a Canadian politician, journalist and Premier of British Columbia between 1889 and 1892. He was a co-founder of the Confederation League, which was instrumental in British Columbia joining the Canadian Confederation. An interesting historical detail for German visitors: after a strong immigration movement of Germans to Vancouver in the early 20th century, the northwestern part of the street became the center of German culture and business activity in the city, so Robson Street soon got the nickname “Robsonstrasse” (even among non-Germans). Even street signs were provided with the German name at that time (however, these are no longer to be seen today).

However, the main reason for walking on Robson Street is the countless shopping opportunities on site. The main shopping district begins roughly at Granville Street, where the huge Nordstrom department store and the Pacific Centre Shopping Mall are located. Robson Street is best known for its many fashion boutiques and shoe stores, which are concentrated primarily in the area between Granville Street in the southeast and Denman Street in the northwest. If you want to max out your credit card, you’ll also find a who’s who of international luxury brands around Robson Street (especially on Burrard and Alberni Streets). From Cartier and Chanel to Gucci and Hermès to Tiffany and Louis Vuitton, all the exclusive labels have stores on site.
