Essentials about Küçüksu Palace in brief
Attentive James Bond fans will know this building from “The world is not enough”. In the movie, Küçüksu Palace is located in Baku, Azerbaijan, and not in Istanbul – but let’s turn a blind eye. Küçüksu translates as “Little Water.” The name refers to the nearby mouth of the small river Göksu into the Bosporus. The small palace is a real feast for the eyes, as it was built entirely of white marble. It was commissioned by Sultan Abd-ul-Mejid I, who had the palace built in the neo-baroque style in the mid-19th century. Today the palace houses a museum.
The use of Küçüksu Palace
However, the sultans never used Küçüksu Palace as a residence, but only came here for day trips. That is why there is not a single bed in the palace. The founder of the Turkish Republic, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, also took a liking to the small palace and worked here on the banks of the Bosphorus from time to time.
For many years Küçüksu served as a picnic spot (with a view) for the people of Istanbul. Indeed, from here one has a great view of the Rumeli Hisari fortress complex on the European side of the Bosphorus. Between 1980 and 1983, the building was restored and turned into a museum.
