HET GRACHTENHUIS

Description

Essentials about Het Grachtenhuis in brief

The Amsterdam Grachtengordel (Canal Belt) is one of the most beautiful and unique sights in the world and is therefore naturally part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Year after year, over three million people visit the Amsterdam canals. So it was only a matter of time before such an important world heritage site got its own museum, where visitors can learn about the creation and development of Amsterdam’s unique canals.

The museum Het Grachtenhuis

Since 2011, interested visitors for whom a boat trip alone is not enough can learn about the origins and development of the Amsterdam Grachtengordel at the Museum Het Grachtenhuis. The museum is located on the Herengracht in one of the best preserved canal houses from the mid-17th century. Famous merchants and bankers used to live here.

In the museum, visitors go on a digital historical “voyage of discovery” that uses animations and 3D projections to guide them through 400 years of history. All the important buildings on and around the Grachtengordel are shown, with the main focus on architectural history.
