Project Description

HASH, MARIHUANA & HEMP MUSEUM

Description

Essentials about the Hash, Marihuana & Hemp Museum in brief

The Netherlands is known worldwide for its liberal drug policy. Amsterdam’s coffee shops in particular are known far beyond the city’s borders as places to obtain and consume soft drugs. It is therefore only logical that the Hash, Marijuana & Hemp Museum is the first museum in the world on the subject of cannabis to be located in Amsterdam.

The mission of the Hash, Marihuana & Hemp Museum

The museum was founded in 1985 and set itself the goal of informing interested visitors about the cultural phenomenon of hashish, hemp and marijuana. It sees itself as an educational center and not as a “propaganda site” for the consumption of cannabis. A museum gallery was opened next to the museum.

The exhibition in the Hash, Marihuana & Hemp Museum

At the museum, visitors learn all about cannabis, from its cultivation and healing rituals in ancient times to its use in modern medicine. The museum and gallery collections include hemp weaving and spinning equipment, 16th- and 17th-century Dutch paintings depicting citizens enjoying cannabis for relaxation, and smoking paraphernalia from around the world showing how hashish and marijuana were and are smoked in different cultures. In addition, multimedia exhibitions with short films provide information about the historical, industrial and political aspects of cannabis.
