Hardly any country or city in the world is as closely associated with a flower as the Netherlands and Amsterdam with the tulip. So it is only logical that Amsterdam also has a tulip museum. Since 2012, lovers of the Dutch national plant have been able to learn about the history of this special flower in an entertaining yet informative way at the Amsterdam Tulip Museum. The museum is located in the very popular Jordaan district diagonally opposite the Anne Frank House.

The tulip’s history

Tulips were introduced to the Netherlands in the second half of the 16th century, first as objects for lovers and later for commercial trade. In the 17th century, the tulip trade in the Netherlands reached its dizzying peak. The “tulip mania” was the first documented speculative bubble in economic history. People sold all their possessions at the time to invest in certain tulip bulbs, hoping for a quick speculative profit.

Nowadays, of course, tulip bulbs are no longer suitable for speculation, but the flowers are still very popular. If you want to take a tulip bulb home with you, you can do so in a museum store. Of course, this offers floral souvenirs of all kinds for sale (but it is cheaper at the Bloemenmarkt).
