The history of Sydney Observatory

At the end of the 18th century, a windmill still stood on Observatory Hill. At the beginning of the 19th century, a fort was built on the strategically important hill, but it was never used. Therefore, a signal station was subsequently erected. As early as 1788, a first observatory existed at the foot of the hill. However, it took until 1858 for a full-scale observatory to be built at the top of Observatory Hill.

Since 1982, the Sydney Observatory has been a part of the Museum of Applied Arts & Sciences (the other, larger part is the Powerhouse Museum). At the Observatory, visitors can learn about astronomy and observe the stars and planets through modern telescopes.
