MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY ART SYDNEY

Description

Essentials about the Museum of Contemporary Art Sydney in brief

Contemporary art lovers should definitely pay a visit to the Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney. It is Australia’s leading museum for the exhibition, interpretation and collection of contemporary works by Australian and international artists.

The building of the Museum of Contemporary Art Sydney

Very centrally located on Circular Quay on the edge of Sydney Harbour, the museum is housed in a very beautiful building of late Art Deco architecture that formerly housed the Harbour Authority. Historically, the Museum of Contemporary Art traces its origins to Australian artist John Power, who bequeathed his fortune to the University of Sydney with the stipulation that it be used to inform and educate the public about contemporary art. In 1989, the current museum building on Circular Quay became vacant and underwent two years of extensive restoration. In 1991, the Museum of Contemporary Art finally opened its doors.

The collection of the Museum of Contemporary Art Sydney

The museum’s collection includes over 4,000 works by Australian artists, encompassing all art forms from painting to photography, video to sculpture. Works by Aboriginal artists are also part of the collection. If so much art makes you hungry or thirsty, you should definitely go to the museum café, from which you have a spectacular view of Sydney Harbour.
