Essentials about the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe in brief

After long debates, the German Bundestag decided in 1999 to erect a central memorial to the Holocaust. The competition was won by the New York star architect Peter Eisenman with his unusual concept of a field of stelae consisting of over 2,700 concrete blocks of varying heights.

Between 2003 and 2005, the memorial was built on an area of around 19,000 square meters between the Brandenburg Gate and Potsdamer Platz and has been open to the public since May 2005. The Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe is an impressive and at the same time depressing place of remembrance for the up to six million Jewish victims of the Holocaust.

The memorial is complemented by an underground place of information, also designed by Eisenman, which provides information about the victims of the Holocaust on 800 square meters. In several thematic rooms, such as the Room of Dimensions, the Room of Families and the Room of Names, an approach to the personal fates is attempted by means of pictures, diaries and farewell letters. Historical film and photo material shows the places of persecution and extermination.
