In the DDR (GDR) Museum Berlin, the German Democratic Republic comes back to life. The museum’s permanent exhibition deals with life and everyday culture in the GDR. In 27 thematic areas ranging from housing, food and consumption to family, education and partnership to work, leisure and culture, one learns about daily life in the GDR in all its facets. The topics of party, state, ideology, army and state security are not left out either.

The exhibition in the DDR Museum Berlin

Unlike many other historical museums, the GDR Museum actually allows visitors to touch history – most of the exhibits can be touched. You can get behind the wheel of a Trabant and, by means of a 3D simulation on the windshield, get the feeling of actually driving through East Berlin between the department stores and prefabricated buildings. Or browse through the closets of a replica prefab full-comfort apartment and discover and try out East German versions of everyday items.
