Essentials about the Vienna City Hall in brief

The Vienna City Hall, located on the Ringstrasse, is one of the most prominent buildings in the city of Vienna. Built at the end of the 19th century, the City Hall is Vienna’s most important non-church building in the neo-Gothic style. It houses the offices of Vienna’s mayor as well as the city senate, the municipal council and various magistrate departments.

The architecture of the Vienan City Hall

The Vienna City Hall is a building of superlatives. It is almost 100 meters high and around 30 million bricks and more than 40,000 cubic meters of natural stone were used for its construction. The arcaded courtyard of the city hall is one of the largest courtyards in Europe, covering almost 3,000 square meters. The ballroom of the town hall is 71 meters long, 20 meters wide and 18 meters high.

Events in and around the Vienna City Hall

The Vienna City Hall and the square in front of it are the venue for numerous events every year. One of the most important and best known is the so-called Life Ball, an AIDS charity gala. But numerous other balls also take place in the City Hall building every year. Starting in November, the world-famous Advent Market in front of the City Hall creates a Christmas atmosphere. And from January to March, Rathausplatz and Rathauspark are transformed into perhaps the most beautiful ice skating rink in the world.

Opening hours

Guided tours for individuals take place Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 1 pm. Guided tours for groups are offered Monday to Friday from 8 am to 2 pm (number of participants: 10 – 50 persons).
