MINORITENKIRCHE

Description

Essentials about the Minoritenkirche in brief

Located directly behind the Hofburg, the Minoritenkirche (Minorite Church) is one of the oldest churches in the city of Vienna and one of the most striking buildings in the city center. With its unusual gable roof and “shot down tower”, the church rises like a ship above the silhouette of Vienna’s city center.

The history of the Minoritenkirche

The name of the church goes back to the clergymen of the Franciscan Order called Minorites (or Friars Minor), who were called to Vienna at the beginning of the 13th century and founded the Vienna Minorite Monastery there. The Minorite Church was one of the first Gothic churches in eastern Austria. Since the end of the 18th century, the church has been the property of the Italian Congregation and the spiritual center of Vienna’s Italian community.
