ST. NICHOLAS MEMORIAL

Description

Essentials about St. Nicholas Memorial in brief

The ruin of St. Nikolai Church today is a dedicated memorial to the victims of war and tyranny of the years 1933 to 1945. The church was founded in 1195, but was not completed until 1874. Its 147 meter high tower was world’s highest building for three years until 1877. Only the tower as well as a part of the southern outer wall and the walls of the choir withstood the destruction of the bombing hail in the Second World War. Works of art and monuments were erected for a memorial on the open square of the former church and in its immediate vicinity. Since 2005, a glass elevator in the tower takes vistitors up to an observation deck at a height of 76 meters, from where an impressive panoramic view of Hamburg can be enjoyed.
