If you like boating, taking pictures of lotus flowers or watching cormorants, you should make your way to the Shinobazu Pond in Tokyo. Located on the southern edge of Ueno Park, the Shinobazu Pond is one of the most unusual green spaces in the Japanese capital. The complex consists of three individual ponds: A lotus pond, which is completely covered by flowers in summer, a boat pond, where you can make your rounds in a pedal boat or rowboat, and a cormorant pond, where cormorants have taken up residence.

The grounds of the Shinobazu Pond

Shinobazu Pond consists of three sections: The Lotus Pond, the Boat Pond and the Cormorant Pond. At 55 acres, the Lotus Pond is the largest of the three subareas. The Lotus Pond gets its name from the lotus blossoms that cover nearly the entire surface of the water during the summer months. The 30-hectare Boat Pond is the second largest section of Shinobazu Ponds. As the name implies, you can rent a boat here to paddle across the water. The Cormorant Pond is the smallest of the three ponds, covering 25 hectares. It borders Ueno Zoo and is home to some of the namesake cormorants. In addition to cormorants, several other species of birds and ducks live here.
