The history and layout of Bois de la Cambre

Bois de la Cambre was laid out in 1861 by the German architect Eduard Keilig. Within a short time, the park developed into one of the most popular recreational areas for Brussels residents, comparable to Bois de Boulogne in Paris. In the past, the park housed a cycling track, a trotting track, a theater and even a dairy farm.

Today, the park is most popular for its many paths and lawns, which locals use by the thousands on weekends and fair-weather days for walking, jogging, biking, barbecuing and chilling. The park’s most important building is Chalet Robinson, built in 1877 on a small island in the park’s lake. Destroyed by fire in 1991, it was rebuilt by 2009. Today the chalet houses a restaurant, which can be reached by ferry.
