Essentials about the Austrian National Library in brief
The Austrian National Library is the country’s largest library and central memory institution. It is the only library in Austria that keeps voucher copies of all publications published in the country, including offline media.
The Prunksaal of the Austrian National Library
Except for bookworms, that would probably be too little reason to visit. But the National Library is not only the largest library in Austria, but with its State Hall, one of the most beautiful library halls in the world, and its five museums, it definitely offers reason enough for a visit.
The museums of the Austrian National Library
In the Literature Museum one can learn about the diversity and polyphony of Austrian literature from the end of the 18th century to the present. The Globe Museum exhibits more than 250 historical globes and globe-like instruments such as armillary spheres, planetaria and telluria. In the Papyrus Museum, one can discover some 300 pieces of writing, starting with the oldest papyri from the middle of the 2nd millennium B.C. The Esperanto Museum conveys the eventful history of the art language Esperanto. And in November 2018, the new House of History was opened on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Republic of Austria.
