Description

Essentials about the Burgtheater in brief

Not only theater lovers should make an effort to get tickets for a performance at the Burgtheater when visiting Vienna. The theater, also affectionately called “die Burg” (“the Castle”) by the Viennese, is namely a true institution in the theater metropolis of Vienna. As Austria’s national theater, it is not only the country’s most important drama stage, but also the largest German-language spoken theater. In terms of staff and budget, it is the richest and largest repertory theater in the world, and the ensemble of the Burgtheater is among the crème de la crème of the German-speaking actors’ guild.

The history of the Burgtheater

Known far beyond the borders of Austria, the Burgtheater is also one of the most important stages in Europe and the second oldest European spoken theater after the Comédie Francaise in Paris. The Burg has existed since 1748, and since 1888 the theater with its beautiful building has stood in its present location on the Universitätsring.
