Essentials about the Museum of Applied Arts in brief
The Austrian Museum of Applied Arts, or MAK for short, is one of the most important museums of contemporary art in the world. Originally set up as a collection of samples, the MAK’s unique collection today displays objects and works from the fields of applied art, design and architecture. These are arranged chronologically from the Middle Ages to the present or by region of origin. The MAK is housed in the magnificent Ringstrasse building by Heinrich von Ferstel. In addition to the display collection, the MAK Design Laboratory, established in 2014, is also worth a visit. The laboratory was built as a deliberate counter-design to the collection and extends the modern understanding of design to earlier centuries.
