BOIS DE LA CAMBRE

Description

Essentials about Bois de la Cambre in brief

Located in the southeast of Brussels, Bois de la Cambre forest park is one of the most popular recreational areas for Brussels residents. The park, which covers more than 120 hectares, is the extension of the Soignes Forest into the urban area of Brussels. The popularity of Bois de la Cambre is mainly based on its versatility. Walkers, joggers, cyclists and inline skaters enjoy the many paths through the park. The lawns invite to barbecue and chill out. The woods are an adventure playground, especially for children. And the restaurant at Chalet Robinson takes care of the physical well-being in the park.

The history and layout of Bois de la Cambre

Bois de la Cambre was laid out in 1861 by the German architect Eduard Keilig. Within a short time, the park developed into one of the most popular recreational areas for Brussels residents, comparable to Bois de Boulogne in Paris. In the past, the park housed a cycling track, a trotting track, a theater and even a dairy farm.

Today, the park is most popular for its many paths and lawns, which locals use by the thousands on weekends and fair-weather days for walking, jogging, biking, barbecuing and chilling. The park’s most important building is Chalet Robinson, built in 1877 on a small island in the park’s lake. Destroyed by fire in 1991, it was rebuilt by 2009. Today the chalet houses a restaurant, which can be reached by ferry.
