Botafogo is one of the most beautifully located neighborhoods in Rio de Janeiro. The neighborhood is picturesquely situated between the Mundo Novo, Santa Marta and Morro de São João hills. The beach of Botafogo is located on the Guanabara Bay and is thus shielded from the Atlantic Ocean. Finally, in the southeast, the Urca Peninsula with the world-famous Sugarloaf Mountain adjoins Botafogo. Botafogo is also known for its high concentration of cafes, cinemas, theaters and stores.

The name “Botafogo”

The district was named after João Pereira de Sousa Botafogo, an artillery officer on the galleon Botafogo (which means “to set on fire”). Botafogo was given the nickname of his ship and later settled on the land he was given by the Portuguese crown.

Going out and shopping in Botafogo

Today, Botafogo is a popular place to live for Rios middle class and is best known for its high concentration of cafes, cinemas and theaters. It is also home to two of the city’s largest shopping centers, Praia de Botafogo Shopping and Shopping RioSul. International fame (at least among soccer fans) has the district through its club Botafogo FR.
