The collection of the Museu Nacional de Belas Artes

The collection of the Museu Nacional de Belas Artes comprises more than 16,000 works of art, including paintings, sculptures, drawings and prints by Brazilian and international artists from the Middle Ages to the modern era. In addition, the museum houses a library with more than 19,000 titles. Located in the heart of downtown Rio, the museum building was designed by architect Adolfo Morales de los Rios, whose plans were inspired by the Louvre in Paris.

The history of the Museu Nacional de Belas Artes

The art museum was founded in 1937 through an initiative of the Minister of Education, Gustavo Capanema, and inaugurated just one year later. The holdings were based in their beginnings on the escape of the Portuguese King John VI from Lisbon and the taking of parts of the Portuguese art collection to Rio de Janeiro in 1807. These works of art remained in Brazil when John VI later returned to Portugal.
