PARQUE LAGE

Description

Essentials about Parque Lage in brief

Those who know Snoop Dogg’s music video for the song “Beautiful” will know this park. Located at the foot of the Corcovado and Tijuca National Park, Parque Lage is definitely one of the most beautiful green spaces in Rio de Janeiro and a wonderful place to relax in the middle of the big city. Surprisingly/fortunately, the park is not yet as overrun with tourists as other attractions in Rio. This makes it all the more popular with the cariocas (Rio residents), both families and lovers.

The grounds of Parque Lage

The park area of about 50 hectares once belonged to the big industrialist Enrique Lage (which is why the park is officially called “Parque Enrique Lage”) and his wife, the opera singer Gabriella Besanzoni. The park was laid out as early as 1840 by the English landscape architect John Tyndale and blends in very harmoniously with the surrounding rainforest.

In the 1960s the area was transformed into a public park. The former mansion of Lage and his wife now houses the Escola de Artes Visuals do Parque Lage (School of Visual Arts of Parque Lage), where the students’ works are also exhibited. There is also a very idyllic café in the courtyard of the building.

The best way to discover the park and its secrets is to take one of the many paths. On the grounds are old stables, a mysterious cave, a castle-like tower and an aquarium.

If you are reasonably good on foot, you can hike up from Parque Lage along a trail to Corcovado and the world-famous statue Cristo Redentor. On the way through the subtropical rainforest you walk past some beautiful waterfalls.
