PRAIA VERMELHA

Description

Essentials about Praia Vermelha in brief

If you are looking for an idyllic beach in the heart of Rio de Janeiro that is not yet overrun by tourists, you should unroll your towel on Praia Vermelha. The small, only about 250 meters long beach at the foot of Sugarloaf Mountain is mainly visited by locals and attracts with typical Brazilian vacation feeling.

The location of Praia Vermelha

The fact that Praia Vermelha is left behind by most tourists is due to its immediate proximity to Copacabana Beach. The two beaches are separated only by a small headland with the two hills Morro do Urubu and Morro de Leme. Praia Vermelha is especially popular for its security. Because of a nearby military base, the beach is one of the safest in all of Rio.

By the way, Praia Vermelha means “Red Beach”. However, the name has very little to do with the actual appearance of the beach. Only at sunset the beach gets (with a little imagination) a reddish glow.

Swimming at Praia Vermelha

At this point a warning is addressed to water rats: At Praia Vermelha you should only swim with the utmost caution. The great depth of the water combined with unpredictable waves and treacherous currents can quickly become a danger. It is therefore better to enjoy the idyllic beach from the safety of the shore or from a bird’s eye view.

The lower station of the cable car to Sugarloaf Mountain is located in the immediate vicinity of Praia Vermelha. From Praça General Tibúrcio, the cable car first goes up to Morro da Urca and from there on to the world-famous Sugarloaf Mountain. From the cable car cabin you have a great view of Praia Vermelha below.
