VANCOUVER MARITIME MUSEUM

Description

Essentials about the Vancouver Maritime Museum in brief

Anyone who is enthusiastic about ships and seafaring should have seen the Vancouver Maritime Museum. The maritime museum, which also has a small museum harbor, is located in Vanier Park, directly at the mouth of the False Creek estuary into English Bay. The museum is thus in the immediate vicinity of the Museum of Vancouver and the H. R. MacMillan Space Centre, whose building is equally located in Vanier Park only a few meters away.

The exhibition of the Vancouver Maritime Museum

The centerpiece of the exhibition is the St. Roch, a Royal Canadian Mounted Police schooner. In the early 1940s, under Captain Henry Larsen, this ship was the first to complete the Northwest Passage, i.e. the direct connection of the Atlantic with the Pacific through the Arctic in both directions. Since 1958, the ship has been permanently anchored in a dry dock. The museum building was constructed around it.

Another important exhibit is the Ben Franklin research submersible. Jacques Piccard explored the Gulf Stream and its drift with this submarine, which is located outside the museum.

Especially for children, there is the Children’s Maritime Discovery Centre, an interactive exhibition area that teaches children about ships and seafaring in an age-appropriate and entertaining way. In addition, the Vancouver Maritime Museum organizes changing exhibitions on the history of seafaring and has a corresponding library and a large collection of model ships. Visitors can even watch the model makers at work in a workshop.
