Essentials about VanDusen Botanical Garden in brief
VanDusen Botanical Garden is a 22-acre oasis of tranquility and beauty. Visitors can expect to see over 7,500 species of plants from around the world in the garden, including rhododendrons, copper beeches, hackberry bushes, ash trees, magnolias, broom heather bushes and hollies. The botanical garden is located in the Shaughnessy district, just a short distance from Queen Elizabeth Park.
The history of VanDusen Botanical Garden
VanDusen Botanical Garden was established in the early 1970s after residential development was planned for the site. Funded by a donation from W. J. VanDusen, a philanthropist and lumber industry executive after whom the garden is named, the transformation into a botanical garden began in 1971. In 1975, the garden finally opened its doors to the public.
The grounds of VanDusen Botanical Garden
Unlike other botanical gardens, VanDusen Botanical Garden does not conduct any scientific research, but is limited purely to plant care. For this reason, VanDusen Botanical Garden has no research facilities or herbaria. On the grounds are carved totem poles, large stone sculptures, and a Korean pavilion that is the focal point of the Asian section. Those interested in the details of the VanDusen Botanical Gardens can also explore the garden on a guided tour.
Those who prefer to play hide and seek instead can do so excellently in an Elizabethan hedge maze. And those who prefer to dine in the beautiful surroundings can enjoy the botanical garden on the terraces of the Truffles Café or the Shaughnessy Restaurant.
