LAMMA ISLAND

Description

Essentials about Lamma Island in brief

If you want to turn your back on the hustle and bustle of the city of Hong Kong, you should make your way to Lamma Island. Because on the island located in the southeast of Hong Kong Island, clocks go a little slower than in many other parts of Hong Kong. A walk on Lamma Island takes you through a still largely intact natural environment, lined with turquoise bays and idyllic fishing villages.

Characteristics of Lamma Island

With an area of just under 14 square kilometers, Lamma Island is the fourth largest island in Hong Kong. Despite its size, Lamma Island has just 6,000 inhabitants. This is primarily because it is forbidden to build buildings with more than three stories on the island. In addition, the island is largely car-free; only municipal vehicles are allowed to drive here. Compared to other areas of Hong Kong, land and property prices on Lamma Island are very low. Against this background, the island has become a popular place to live among younger people, expatriates and, above all, artists.

The sights of Lamma Island

Day trippers come to Lamma Island mainly for the nature, beaches, and shopping and dining opportunities. Those who want to shop and dine should stroll through Yung Shuen Wan Main Street. The street is lined with many Asian and Western eateries, and there are several stores selling handicrafts from Southeast Asia.

A hike across Lamma Island allows visitors to discover the island’s beautiful and still largely untouched nature, wandering along turquoise bays and through traditional fishing villages. Also famous are the island’s two Tin Hau temples, built in 1826. Tin Hau temples are typical Chinese religious sites in coastal areas dedicated to Tin Hau, a Daoist deity who is often worshipped as the patron saint of the sea and is said to ensure good weather and full fishing nets.
