Essentials about the Peak Tower in brief
The Peak Tower is one of the most striking buildings in Hong Kong, which is not lacking in striking buildings. And it is definitely one of the most beautiful viewpoints of the city. The building, which is already visible from afar, is located at a height of 396 meters below the local mountain of Hong Kong Island, the Victoria Peak (hence the name). In addition to the viewing terrace, the Peak Tower also houses several restaurants, cafes and souvenir stores, as well as attractions such as Madame Tussauds Hong Kong, the Madness 3D Adventure (three-dimensional images of Hong Kong) and the Peak Tram Historical Gallery (with historical memorabilia of the Peak Tram cable car).
The architecture of the Peak Tower
In order not to have a lasting impact on the natural landscape of the surrounding hills, the architects opted for an anvil-shaped building just about 30 meters high, which blends quite harmoniously into the hilly landscape. Despite the low construction height of the Peak Tower, one can enjoy a gradiose view of the skyline of Hong Kong Island, Victoria Harbour and Kowloon on the other side of the water from the observation terrace (Sky Terrace 428) on top of the roof (provided it is not foggy or hazy).
The building standing atop Victoria Peak today is the second. The first Peak Tower was built in the 1960s. In 1993, the building was demolished and rebuilt by 1997. In 2005/06, Peak Tower underwent a major renovation.
The attractions in Peak Tower
In addition to the observation deck, restaurants, cafes and souvenir stores, there are several other attractions in the Peak Tower: Madame Tussauds Hong Kong, the Madness 3D Adventure (three-dimensional images of Hong Kong) and the Peak Tram Historical Gallery (with historical memorabilia of the cable railroad). Right next to the Peak Tower is the Peak Galleria shopping and leisure center.
The trip to Peak Tower should definitely be made on the famous Peak Tram. The historic cable car has been around since 1888, with the bottom station at the foot of Victoria Peak in the Central district and the top station right at Peak Tower. There’s no more comfortable (and spectacular) way to get up the mountain.
Viewpoints around the Peak Tower
By the way, if you don’t want to pay the entrance fee for the observation deck Sky Terrace 428 on the Peak Tower, you will find some other (free) impressive viewpoints in the immediate vicinity, namely the observation deck of the Peak Galleria and the Lions View Point Pavilion.
