PENG CHAU

Description

Essentials about Peng Chau in brief

The mini island of Peng Chau is something of an insider tip among the sights of Hong Kong. Although the island located in the northeast of the much larger Lantau Island is now mentioned in many travel guides, Peng Chau is still left out by the tourist masses in Hong Kong. If you are looking for a tranquil little island with an interesting history, many temples and delicious fish restaurants, you should definitely take the ferry to Peng Chau.

The sights of Peng Chau

The island, which is just under one square kilometer in size, is now home to about 6,000 residents who, unlike most other urban areas of Hong Kong, enjoy a quiet and relaxed life – Peng Chau is, after all, car-free. Almost the entire island population lives in the streets around the ferry port; the rest of the island is untouched nature.

If you want to get an overview of Peng Chau and immerse yourself in the island’s history, take a walk along the Peng Chau Family Walk. The island’s abandoned workshops still bear witness to Peng Chau’s industrial past. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the island was a match manufacturing center. The resident Great China Match Factory was once the largest match producer in all of Asia, employing over 1,000 workers (until the lighter took off). After that, Peng Chau fell back into its slumber. Along the Peng Chau Family Walk are also the many temples on the island.

The best viewpoint on Peng Chau is the 95 meter high Finger Hill. From here you can enjoy a wonderful view of the island, the surrounding South China Sea, the impressive Tsing Ma Bridge and Hong Kong Disneyland on neighboring Lantau Island.

Eating and drinking on Peng Chau

If you get hungry after a walk around the island, you should definitely stop at one of the many fish restaurants. There is hardly any other place in Hong Kong where you can get such freshly caught fish as in the restaurants of Peng Chau. The ambience of the restaurants is rather simple, but it’s all about taste.
