TAI MO SHAN

Description

Essentials about Tai Mo Shan in brief

At 957 meters above sea level, Tai Mo Shan is the highest elevation in Hong Kong. It even holds the title of the highest coastal mountain in South China and is the second highest coastal mountain in all of China. The mountain is located in the Tai Mo Shan Country Park of the same name, quite central in the New Territories and thus quite far from the city center. If you like hiking, you should not miss the ascent of Tai Mo Shan during a trip to Hong Kong.

The ascent to Tai Mo Shan

Because of its height but also because of its good accessibility, Tai Mo Shan is a popular hiking destination. A road leads far up the mountain, on top of which there are several transmitting stations (therefore, the highest point of the mountain cannot be reached on foot). Those who like hiking can of course reach the highest mountain of Hong Kong via one of many hiking trails leading to the summit. By the way, Tai Mo Shan is also on the famous MacLehose Trail, the longest hiking trail across Hong Kong.

The view from Tai Mo Shan

In Cantonese, Tai Mo Shan is often referred to as “The Great Misty Mountain”. And indeed, the mountain often lives up to its name. Due to the high humidity at altitude, the weather is often foggy or cloudy. Incidentally, Tai Mo Shan is also the only point in Hong Kong where temperatures can drop below freezing. So before a trip to Tai Mo Shan, it is better to check the weather and visibility conditions. In good weather, however, you can enjoy a magnificent distant view of the various districts of the metropolis of Hong Kong from the mountain.
