Tap Mun is a small island of just 1.7 square kilometers located off the coast of Sai Kung Country Park in the far east of Hong Kong. Because of its steady wind, Tap Mun is very popular with kite flyers. But also many campers get lost on the island because of the idyllic landscape.

The characteristics of Tap Mun

Tap Mun’s English name is “Grass Island,” and anyone who arrives on the island will quickly see why. The rolling, grassy hills would be the perfect location for a milk or yogurt commercial. Indeed, there are plenty of (semi) feral cows running around on Grass Island, but they don’t pose a threat to campers or other visitors to the island (as long as you don’t disturb them while they’re grazing). Besides the cows, there are also a few locals on Tap Mun, although from once over 2,000 inhabitants only about 100 are left today, who live from fishing and tourism.

Places of interest on Tap Mun

The best way to spend a day on Tap Mun is to walk around the island. An approximately two kilometer long footpath leads you across the island to the hill in its center. From the path you have a great view of the surrounding South China Sea and enjoy especially the refreshing breeze that always blows on Tap Mun. Also worth seeing is the Tin Hau Temple, which is about 400 years old. According to a legend, behind its age begins a tunnel that leads to the Tap Mun Cave at the other end of the island and once served pirates as a connecting passage. After an island hike, be sure to stop at one of Tap Mun’s seafood restaurants to eat a delicious fresh catch and drink an (ice-free) “iced milk tea” for which the island is famous.
