Essentials about the Kampa Museum in brief

The Kampa Museum is one of the younger museums in Prague. For fans of modern art, a visit to the private gallery is definitely recommended. The museum displays works of art owned by the couple Meda Mládková and Jan Mládek, especially extensive collections of the painter František Kupka and the sculptor Otto Gutfreund. The Kampa Museum is located on the eponymous Kampa Island on the left bank of the Vltava River, just south of Charles Bridge.

The history and collections of the Kampa Museum

The museum traces its origins to Meda Mládková, who began collecting paintings by the Czech painter Kupka in the 1950s in the United States. She also bought works by other artists from the former Eastern Bloc countries of Yugoslavia, Poland, Czechoslovakia and Hungary to exhibit in the West.

The Kampa Museum is housed in the building of a former mill. In 1896, the Sova Mill on the Vltava River burned down, and its operation had to be stopped as a result. In the 20th century the building was used by various cultural institutions. From 2000, the dilapidated mill building was finally renovated and turned into a museum. Since 2003 it has housed the Kampa Museum. In addition to the collection of Meda Mládková and Jan Mládek, Czech poet, artist and political activist Jiří Kolář and artist Běla Kolářová also donated their art collections to the museum.
