Essentials about Prague Zoo in brief
Prague Zoo is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful and species-appropriate zoos in Europe. It is also the largest zoo in the Czech Republic. Opened in 1931, the zoo is located in the northern Prague district of Troy, directly on the banks of the Vltava River. Covering an area of 58 hectares, the zoo’s landscape is interspersed with natural watercourses and streams. Prague Zoo is home to nearly 5,000 animals of about 700 species. The zoo is home to classic visitor favorites, such as Asian elephants, Siberian tigers and polar bears, as well as numerous rarely shown animals, such as West Caucasian ibex, white-naped moorland antelope and Chinese giant salamanders.
The special location of the zoo
The peculiarity of Prague Zoo is its location on two levels. Part of the zoo is located on a small mountain, which can also be comfortably reached by a chairlift. On the south side of the mountain there is a rocky escarpment, which is an ideal habitat for ibexes and Barbary macaques.
The highlights of Prague Zoo
One of the highlights of the Prague Zoo is the African Savannah. With an area of 2.5 hectares, it is the largest enclosure in the zoo. Here giraffes, zebras, antelopes and ostriches cavort, which can be observed from a kind of viewing platform. For cat lovers, a visit to the Cat House is an absolute must. Siberian tigers, Sumatran tigers, cheetahs, Amur leopards and clouded leopards live here. Gorilla fans have the opportunity to get to know an ape family better in the Gorilla House, which shares its habitat with smaller tamarin monkeys and armadillos. And those who enjoy tropical settings should not miss the Indonesian Jungle House. Amidst a tropical garden including a waterfall and river, more than 1,000 animals live here, including orangutans, turtles and flying foxes.
