The collection of the Gemäldegalerie

The Berlin Gemäldegalerie is one of the world’s most important collections of masterpieces from all periods of art history. It owns works by the great masters Pieter Bruegel, Caravaggio, Albrecht Dürer, Jan van Eyck, Raphael, Rembrandt, Peter Paul Rubens, Titian and Jan Vermeer van Delft. Especially German and Italian painting of the 13th to 16th centuries and Dutch painting of the 15th to 17th centuries can be excellently admired and studied here.

The building of the Gemäldegalerie

Since 1998, the Gemäldegalerie has been housed in a simple new building at the Kulturforum. The museum now permanently displays around 1,400 works of art. The more than two-kilometer-long tour leads visitors through 18 halls and 41 cabinets. The presentation of the works in the picture gallery is remarkable. Each room has its own wall color as a perfect background for the paintings. And all the works of art are illuminated only by daylight.
