Essentials about Champ de Mars in brief
Champ de Mars (Engl. “Mars Field”), often referred to as the Parc du Champ-de-Mars, is a 24-hectare green space in a very prominent location. It connects the French Military Academy (École Militaire) to the southwest with the Eiffel Tower to the northeast. Behind the Eiffel Tower, on the other bank of the Seine, the green area continues virtually in the gardens of the Trocadéro.
The history of Champ de Mars
Until the middle of the 18th century, Champ de Mars site was still used for agriculture. After the establishment of the École Militaire in 1765, the site was then developed as a parade ground. The five World’s Fairs held in Paris between 1867 and 1937 also used the site. Today, however, no structural remnants of the exhibitions remain. The most recent addition to the Champ de Mars is the Wall of Peace, inaugurated in 2000.
Activities on Champ de Mars
Because of its magnificent location at the foot of the Eiffel Tower, thousands of locals and tourists gather in the park every day (especially in good weather) to picnic, play music, take photos or just chill out. Especially after dark, when the illuminated Eiffel Tower shines in the night sky, you should definitely make a detour to the Champs de Mars.
