Anyone interested in contemporary art should definitely plan a visit to the Fondation Louis Vuitton. Created on the initiative of Bernard Arnault, CEO of the French luxury goods group Louis Vuitton Moët Hennessy (LVMH), the museum displays a wide range of 20th century works.

The building of the Louis Vuitton Foundation

The museum is located in the northern part of Bois de Boulogne. Construction work began in 2008, and the museum was finally opened in 2014. The building is one of the architectural highlights of Paris. Because of its steel, wood and glass elements in front of the facade, which resemble ship sails, the building, designed by the American star architect Frank Gehry, is called “The Glass Ship”. Inside the building there are eleven galleries on 11,000 square meters, as well as an auditorium with 400 seats. A special feature of the museum is the concept of light incidence. This takes place through chimneys directed upwards and covered, whose panes refract the sunlight and do not lead it directly into the exhibition rooms.

The museum displays works from the private collection of Bernard Arnault and from the corporate collection of LVMH, including works by Ellsworth Kelly, Thomas Schütte, Andy Warhol, Andreas Gursky, Isa Genzken, Olafur Eliasson, Wolfgang Richter, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Gilbert & George and Jeff Koons. If you need to take a break from so much contemporary art, you can do so on one of the museum’s many terraces, from where you can enjoy a great view of Paris.
