Essentials about the Musée Rodin in brief
Lovers of sculpture should definitely combine a trip to Paris with a visit to the Musée Rodin. Located right next to the Hôtel des Invalides, the museum is almost exclusively dedicated to the work of the world-famous French sculptor Auguste Rodin.
The building of the Musée Rodin
The Musée Rodin is housed in the Hôtel Biron, a former city palace from the 18th century. From 1904, the palace was inhabited by artists, including August Rodin between 1908 and 1917. It is thanks to his efforts that the building was not demolished. After his death, the museum was opened in 1919 with the works of art donated by Rodin.
The collection of the Musée Rodin
The Musée Rodin’s collection includes some 7,000 sculptures, 7,000 drawings, 25,000 photographs and 7,000 other art objects. Among them are works not only by Rodin himself, but also by his longtime lover, the sculptor Camille Claudel, as well as Rodin’s private collection. The main attraction of the museum is the world-famous sculpture “The Thinker”, a likeness of the philosopher and poet Dante Alighieri, with whom Rodin was preoccupied throughout his life. The Thinker is considered one of the most important works of modern sculpture and is exhibited in the beautiful garden area of the museum.
