FERNSEHTURM BERLIN

Description

Essentials about the Fernsehturm Berlin in brief

Along with the Brandenburg Gate and the Reichstag building, the Fernsehturm Berlin (Berlin TV Tower) is the third famous landmark of the city and shapes the silhouette of the German capital like no other building. Easily visible from all corners of Berlin, the TV Tower is also the tallest structure in Germany at 368 meters and one of the tallest in all of Europe. In the year of its completion in 1969, the tower was the second highest television tower in the world and, with over one million visitors annually, is one of the ten most popular sights in Germany. No wonder, given the magnificent view over Berlin, which you can enjoy from the TV Tower.

The history of the Fernsehturm Berlin

In the 1950s, the Müggelberge in southeast Berlin were actually intended as the site for the TV Tower. However, since these were in the approach path of the planned Schönefeld airport, the tower was erected at the familiar site in Berlin-Mitte between Alexanderplatz and the Marx-Engels-Forum (historic Marienviertel). This was not least to demonstrate the (supposed) strength and efficiency of the socialist social system in the immediate vicinity of the border to West Berlin.

The view from the Fernsehturm Berlin

The two visitor elevators take visitors in around 40 seconds to the viewing platform at a height of 203 meters, where Berlin’s highest bar is also located. Here, 60 windows offer a magnificent panoramic view of all of Berlin and the surrounding countryside. One floor above the observation deck is a revolving restaurant at 207 meters, which rotates 360° within an hour.
