GERMAN HISTORICAL MUSEUM

Description

Essentials about the German Historical Museum in brief

For history buffs, a visit to the German Historical Museum is an absolute must, as it takes visitors on a journey through time, tracing some 1,500 years of Germany’s past from the early Middle Ages to the present day. Around 7,000 exhibits on 8,000 square meters tell the story(ies) of people, ideas, events and historical processes. What makes the exhibition special is the fact that it not only focuses on the “big story” and formative personalities, but also delves into the everyday lives of people in the individual eras.

The exhibition at the German Historical Museum

At the beginning of the permanent exhibition, the changes in the course of borders in Germany and Europe as well as the history of the German language are thematized. The subsequent tour through a sequence of chronologically arranged epochal areas focuses on political history, which was and is shaped by rulers, politicians and communities.

The building of the German Historical Museum

The German Historical Museum is housed in the baroque Zeughaus Unter den Linden. In 2003, the museum was complemented by the new building designed by the famous architect Ieoh Ming Bei, in which special exhibitions are shown.
