The Kaufhaus des Westens (usually called in typical Berlin fashion only in its abbreviated form “KaDeWe”) is not just a department store, but a temple of consumption full of tradition and history. It is not only Germany’s best-known department store, but also the largest department store in mainland Europe, with 60,000 square meters of sales space. Customers are spoilt for choice with almost 400,000 goods on sale at KaDeWe. The KaDeWe can look back on a history of over 100 years. In 1907, the luxury department store opened its doors for the first time and brought Berliners a new kind of shopping experience of a very special kind – from the hottest fashion from Paris to exotic foods from all over the world.
