Essentials about the Topography of Terror in brief

The Topography of Terror is one of the places in Berlin where the darkest chapter of the German past becomes present. The site bears the name because it was home to the most important institutions of the Nazi regime’s persecution and terror apparatus between 1933 and 1945: The headquarters of the Geheime Staatspolizei (Gestapo), the Reichsführung-SS and the Sicherheitsdienst (SD) of the SS, and from 1939 the Reichssicherheitshauptamt. With now over one million visitors a year, the Topography of Terror is one of the most visited memorials and museums in Berlin.

The exhibition of the Topography of Terror

The permanent exhibition in Wilhelm- and Prinz-Albrecht-Straße informs visitors about these institutions and the crimes that emanated from them. Photos and documents in five stations illuminate the history from the seizure of power to the end of the war. A second permanent exhibition in the excavations along Niederkirchnerstraße focuses on Berlin’s role as the capital of the “Third Reich.” Exhibition panels provide information about Berlin in the Weimar Republic, Berlin under National Socialism and the war, and the consequences of Nazi rule. The glass panels provide a view of the excavations on the site. The site also includes the longest remaining piece of the Berlin Wall in the center of Berlin.
