MINIATUR WUNDERLAND

Description

Essentials about the Miniatur Wunderland in brief

The Miniatur Wunderland (Miniature Wonderland) is not only one of the most popular, but also one of the most fascinating tourist attractions in all of Germany. The largest model railroad layout in the world is a true masterpiece of miniature art. In the attraction, which is housed in an old warehouse in Hamburg’s historic Speicherstadt, the heart of every model train fan begins to beat faster. There is so much to see and experience in Miniatur Wunderland that even after many hours, young and old children will not want to leave the unique layout. An absolutely unforgettable experience and definitely worth a visit during a trip to Hamburg – not only for passionate modelers!

The layout of the Miniatur Wunderland

The dimension of the model railway layout breaks all records. On an area of more than 1,500 square meters, various cities, regions and countries of the world are represented as incredibly detailed model construction. In all sections of the Wunderland, a total of more than 16 kilometers of track have been laid, on which over 1,100 digitally controlled trains with more than 10,000 wagons are on the move. In total, there are around 4,300 houses and bridges, more than 10,000 vehicles, over 50 aircraft and almost 300,000 figures in Miniatur Wunderland.

The Miniatur Wunderland is truly a technical masterpiece. Hidden in the layouts are countless moving elements and details that make the scenery seem alive. Trains travel through the landscapes, airplanes take off and land at airports, ships move along waterways, and fire and rescue vehicles rush to simulated emergencies. All of these actions are controlled by a complex control system that keeps the miniature world in constant motion.

The Miniatur Wunderland’s lighting technology is equally impressive. Around half a million installed LED lights ensure a recurring day-night change in all sections of the layout.

The sections of the Miniatur Wunderland

The Miniatur Wunderland complex now consists of twelve completed sections ranging in size from 60 to 300 square meters. Visitors walk the layout in winding corridors with peninsula-like protrusions on two levels. In the first three years of existence, the hometown of Hamburg, the fictional German small town of Knuffingen, the Harz Mountains, Austria and America were completed. In the following years, Switzerland, Scandinavia, Italy with Venice, Rio de Janeiro and Patagonia, among others, followed.

Unlike many other attractions, Miniatur Wunderland is constantly evolving. New, unique model regions are created almost every year. In the coming years, sections for Monaco and Provence, the South American rainforest and the Andes, and the Caribbean are to be created.

A visit to the Miniatur Wunderland

Miniatur Wunderland attracts more than a million visitors to the Speicherstadt every year, making the model railroad layout one of Germany’s most popular attractions. Accordingly, the attraction is well visited every day, especially on bad weather days, which are not uncommon in Hamburg. It is therefore advisable to reserve tickets in good time.

A very special way to experience the Miniatur Wunderland is on a guided tour. It allows you to take a look behind the scenes of the fascinating facility. Among other things, participants of a guided tour get an insight into the staging yards and the technology for flight operations.
