OLD ELBE TUNNEL

Description

Essentials about the Old Elbe Tunnel in brief

Elevators and tunnels are no longer an adventure these days. But crossing the Old Elbe Tunnel (Alter Elbtunnel) can definitely still be seen as an adventure! After all, being the first river tunnel on the European continent the Old Elbe Tunnel was both a premiere and a technical masterpiece.

The history of the Old Elbe Tunnel

At its opening in 1911, the Old Elbe Tunnel was a technical sensation and truly a masterpiece of engineering. After all, it was the first river tunnel on the European continent. It had become necessary in order to bring the many dock workers in Hamburg faster and more comfortably from the north side of the Elbe to the south side of the river, to which the focus of port activity had increasingly shifted. The tunnel therefore connects the St. Pauli Piers (Landungsbrücken) in the north to the Island of Steinwerder in the south.

The ride through the Old Elbe Tunnel

Anyone who wants to follow the former dock workers suit and cross the river Elbe in a special way should definitely take a ride through the Old Elbe Tunnel. You can do it on foot, by bicycle or by car. First, four large elevator take you down 24 meters. Then you can walk or ride through one of the two 430 meter long tunnel tubes.
