EISBACH

Description

Essentials about the Eisbach in brief

Surfing in the middle of the city? Sure – Munich makes it possible! More precisely, the Eisbach (Ice Creek). Directly behind the Haus der Kunst (House of Arts) is the so-called “Eisbachwelle”, an artificially created wave that attracts surfers from all over the world all year round to show off their surfing skills on their boards. If you only want to watch the spectacle as a spectator, it’s best to stand on the Prinzregentenstraße bridge over the Eisbach.

Surfing in the Eisbach

As the left drainage of the Isar, the Eisbach is the strongest stream in the Englischer Garten (English Garden). A stone step at the outlet near Prinzregentenstrasse of the very watery and fast-flowing Eisbach creates a rapid and a standing wave about half a meter high, which is used by canoeists and river surfers. It is both popular and feared by surfers because directly behind it several rows of stone blocks underwater can cause injury, especially to inexperienced surfers.

About a kilometer downstream, there is a second surf spot, the Kleine Eisbachwelle. It is somewhat easier to ride, but there are still considerable dangers for inexperienced surfers due to the concrete barriers on both sides and the sometimes strong undercurrents.

Swimming in the Eisbach

On warm summer days, the Eisbach is also frequented by swimmers. Swimming is actually prohibited in the entire Englischer Garten. The Eisbach in particular has a strong current and there are regularly objects under the water surface, such as “disposed” bicycles.
