Essentials about the Speicherstadt in brief

The Speicherstadt is one of Hamburg’s landmarks and one of the main attractions at the Port of Hamburg. Covering an area of around 26 hectares, a length of approx. 1.5 kilometres and a width of approx. 150 to 250 metres, it is the world’s largest connected warehouse complex. That absolute superlative must of course be rewarded with the title of a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The architecture of the Speicherstadt

Visitors to Hamburg are regularly surprised by the idyll of the Speicherstadt, which one would hardly expect to find in a major port. The Speicherstadt is built in the style of the Wilhelminian brick Gothic of the so-called Gründerzeit with lots of bizarre gables and turrets reflected in the adjacent canals. The Speicherstadt was built at the end of the 19th century and has been a listed building since 1991.

The sights and attractions in the Speicherstadt

At present, the storage facilities are used to a very limited extent as warehouses. Today, they are home to numerous carpet dealers, agencies, editorial offices, authorities, museums (such as the Spice Museum, the Speicherstadtmuseum and the Customs Museum) and other attractions (such as the Hamburg Dungeon and the Miniatur Wunderland).
